As our scheduled run to Stamford Hall and the usual Founders Day event has been cancelled due to the waterlogged state of the grounds we needed something else to occupy our time.
Rod came to the rescue by suggesting one of our favourite destinations, The Touchdown Cafe at Wellesbourne Airfield.

It was a lovely sunny day and the anticipated crowds of members at our usual assembly point in Wellingborough failed to appear.  Seven members on six bikes did however show up. Linn and I on my Triumph Legend, Bill on his big BMW, Mark on his Yamaha tourer, Martyn on his BMW 800, Rod on his Guzzi Breva and Matt on his ancient Triumph Speedtwin.
Well we are in theory a classic bike club so having Matt on his 1949 Triumph was declared to be a good thing, it just means a slightly reduced pace on main roads.
The journey outward bound was mainly on A class roads through Weedon and Southam towards Wellesbourne Airfield and a very pleasant journey it was too.
When we got there the sun was still shining and amazingly we were able to get a table outside despite the large crowds. This meant whilst waiting for our food to be served we could watch the antics of planes and helicopters over the airfield and on the taxi way alongside us. Very entertaining.
Eventually the food arrived, and it was well worth the wait. Surely the Touchdown Cafe serves the best breakfast bar none, If I was to offer criticism, I think the sausages could be better.  Rod and I opted for the large "All Day Breakfast" which consisted of two eggs, two bacon, two sausage, two fried bread, black pudding, beans, mushrooms and toast all for under a fiver. So engrossed where we in putting in the calories and challenging my statin tablets and Rods diet, that I entirely forgot to take some photos of the airfield.
When we felt able to stand again we felt it was time to leave. We shuffled outside and slowly got aboard our bikes and set off for home.
On this trip I  was determined to lead us on a route back to Northampton that would be ideal for the old Triumph Speedtwin and its similarly aged rider. Country lanes and small picturesque villages all the way were called for and thats what we got. Our return journey took us to the following places, starting in Wellesbourne, Kineton, Warmington, Mollington, Claydon, Upper Boddington, Byfield, Hinton, Pattishall, Rothersthorpe and finally for me Northampton. The pace was as quick as anyone sensible would go at, and it suited the Triumph perfectly. These are the style of roads that existed when Speedtwins were created and its blend of weight and power made it the right tool for the job.
Another good day in sunshine on motorbikes with friends.
