Half a dozen of us made an attendance at the show and were joined by handful of other classic bikes (this being the first year bikes have been included). There were two great talking points of the show. One was the bike of a regular visitor to the 19th Hole with the Phelan and Moore "Pegasus" motorcycle which was designed and built by P&M round the Austin Seven car engine. It is a four cylinder 750cc transverse engine with a double width fuel tank encompassing the full width car radiator cooling system.............really a thing of both rarity and beauty.
The other star attraction was the similarly engine sized three wheel "Kelly" motor car.......registered with DVLA as the make Kelly due solely to the owner being caught off guard when the inspecting officer passed the vehicle for a UK registration and asked what's the make of ca. All he could think of was his own surname so the Kelly trike was born - a true work of art.
Rod and I had a really nice chat with Mr and Mrs Kelly, Mr Kelly having been an electrical engineer who following retirement fancied something to do and after having rebuilt the engine of a wreck of a Citroen 2CV he had been given needed something to put it in. With no experience in woodworking he read a few books on boat building the got from the library and thought if you can make a boat why not a car. Bulk purchase of Parana pine planks he set about shaping the sides in one piece and forming his bodywork..............and so the story goes on and 5 years later the result is there for all to see " best in show" ....and it is not a museum piece they drive all over the country in it ....FANTASTIC!
